Surprisingly enough, the results aren't chaotic but deliver a trippy contemplative techno vibe that is as fluid as it is joyful, and which is characterized by a decisively raw and analog sounding psychedelia that might be closer in spirit to jazz than dance music. Challenging the widely accepted paradigm of pre-programmed live sets in house and techno music, their mission consists of a systematic refusal to prepare anything before hitting the stage. The formation of German leftfield veteran Move D with Dutch duo Juju & Jordash, Magic Mountain High are notorious because of their specific and highly idiosyncratic process of live, improvised creation.

Warpaint translates its concealed tension into drone and tranquil bass, producing a spooky effect that will entrance many listeners, and on their eponymous new record they have spun a meticulous retro-futurist mood piece that is meant for late nights and lost highways. It's lengthy for its small-scale approach, but the slight expansion of instrumentation and vocal arrangements (there's a lot of useful harmony here) makes the experience, for the most part, very enjoyable. This album takes a few listens to really absorb, and the songs, for better or worse, often seem to be built on grooves and sounds more than traditional songwriting.

On this new record, this craftwork is in full effect tracks like "Keep It Healthy," "Love Is to Die," and "Biggy" each show a more polished side of the band, but continue to evoke the dreamy and fluid aura that Warpaint seem to accomplish so easily. The Fool's most engaging track, "Undertow," best exemplified this power, condensing the subdued severity of the album into simple, breathy lilts. The band's specialty has been their ability to conjure melodies out of moods, with hooks just accessible enough to get stuck in your ear while remaining elusive and novel. Once lo-fi, moody rookies, Warpaint hit hard with their self-titled sophomore LP, bringing in A-list talent like Flood and Nigel Godrich producing and mixing, respectively, and adding layers of post-Radiohead avant R&B production sheen to their hazy atmospheric sound. It took nearly four years for the women of this dreamy, Los Angeles-based glamour-psych quartet to follow up their hugely successful 2010 debut, The Fool, and one listen, or even a glance at the credits, explains why.
